The goal of STAR is to scale up efficient production of biobased chemicals and materials with focus on furan compounds from lignocellulosic residues.
STAR is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency and led from Lund University. It involves stakeholders along the value chain and a multidisciplinary group of researchers. They will perform technology optimisation and process design to scale up HMF production from C6 sugars, transformation of HMF and C5 sugar based furfural to FDCA for use in recyclable plastics, and techno-economic and life cycle assessments and product evaluations.
STAR aims to be a platform for linking sectors representing feedstock providers such as agro-food, forestry and recyclers, with chemicals- and plastic producers and users, renewable energy and biofuel industry, technology providers and those with pilot plant facilities.
Project Partners
The project gathers different departments at Lund University and industry partners Alfa Laval, Bona AB, Nordzucker A/S, and Perstorp AB.
Work Packages
STARS’ activities are divided into work packages, led led by both academic and industrial scientists.
